Get up to Speed: 10-12 December 2021

Friday 10 December 2021

This weekend marks the conclusion to a thrilling championship battle in both Formula 1 and its premier feeder category, FIA Formula 2, at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi.

Here’s the lowdown ahead of what promises to be dramatic weekend at the highest echelons of the sport:

Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

After one of the longest and closest-fought championship battles in recent history, Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Max Verstappen (Red Bull) head to Yas Marina tied on points at the championship summit for a one-race shootout to decide the sport’s top prize.

For Hamilton, victory will mean a record-breaking eighth world title, taking him ahead of Michael Schumacher in that regard, whilst for Verstappen it would be a historic first World Championship for the Dutch star.

After tensions between the pair escalated to an all-time high last time out at the inaugural Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, this weekend’s race under the floodlights is being billed as one of the box office sporting events of the year, with live coverage available on both Sky Sports F1 and Channel 4 in the UK.

The season finale also marks Motorsport UK Academy graduate George Russell’s final outing with the Williams team ahead of his switch to Mercedes alongside Hamilton for 2022 and beyond, whilst McLaren’s Lando Norris will be targeting a strong end to the campaign after a recent run of misfortune.

FIA Formula 2 – Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi

After claiming a fifth consecutive pole position in qualifying earlier this afternoon, PREMA’s Oscar Piastri stands on the verge of being crowned FIA Formula 2 champion at the first attempt.

Only team-mate Robert Schwartzman can deny the Australian talent his third major junior single seater crown in four seasons, but the odds are stacked in Piastri’s favour, the current championship leader 55.5 points out front with 61 left on the table across this weekend’s triple header.
