It was a rollercoaster of emotions for the motorsport community this weekend (31 July – 1 August 2021) and British drivers flew the flag in both Europe and on home soil. Here’s Motorsport UK’s weekend round up featuring a handful of incredible events.

2021 FIA Formula One World Championship – Round 11 at Hungary

It was a stunning drive from Alpine F1 driver Esteban Ocon who took his first Formula One win in Budapest on Sunday. The Frenchman might have prevented championship contender Lewis Hamilton from taking his 100^th Grand Prix victory, on a track where he has won more than any other in his career, but the Englishman secured his 101^st pole position on the Hungarian circuit.

A dramatic first corner resulted in a red flag after Valtteri Bottas locked-up and pushed former Motorsport UK Academy driver Lando Norris into Max Verstappen before pirouetting into Sergio Perez. The Aston Martin of Lance Stroll also wiped-out Charles Leclerc, with Daniel Ricciardo adding to the tally of innocent drivers being spun.

With only 14 drivers surviving the chaos on the opening lap and having had his fair share of misfortunes, it was celebrations for former Motorsport UK Academy graduate George Russell who scored his first championship points for Williams after two years of waiting.

W Series – Round 4 at Budapest

Jamie Chadwick once again took charge in the Hungarian leg of the 2021 W Series. The Motorsport UK Academy Team UK driver had a superb lights-to-flag victory to complete the perfect weekend in Budapest where she topped all three sessions. Jamie’s second win of the season means she leads the championship lead going into the summer break by one point over fellow Brit Alice Powell.

FIA Formula 3 Championship – Round 4 at Hungary

Motorsport UK Team UK drivers Olli Cadwell and Johnathan Hoggard were both served with five-second penalties after the second race in Hungary for causing a collision and forcing a driver off track respectively. Despite a turbulence race weekend, Cadwell is still the highest place Brit sitting third in the driver’s standing.

British Touring Car Championship – Oulton Park

Back on home soil, it was a day of firsts in the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship with Dan Rowbottom, Rory Butcher and Senna Proctor each claiming a win apiece at Oulton Park. Rowbottom’s popular win on the Cheshire track marked his maiden BTCC career victory with Butcher and Proctor tasting their first success of the season. Like, the Hungarian Grand Prix, drama ensured from the outset when the race was red flagged on one of two occasions with the latter ending the track action ahead of schedule.

Thanks to his winning weekend, Dan Rowbottom is now third in the standings. Get the latest from the BTCC ahead of the next event which takes place in Knockhill (14-15 August 2021).

F4 British Championship certified by FIA – Round 10, 11 & 12 at Oulton Park

After three different winners across three races at Oulton Park at the weekend, it’s still advantage James Headly in the championship order. It was a long time coming but McKenzy Cresswell achieved his first British F4 win at the Cheshire circuit and victory for the local hero meant he was propelled to fourth in the championship fight.
