FIA Formula 3 Championship: The Crucible for Future F1 Stars

Tuesday 01 July 2025

The FIA Formula 3 Championship is the entry-level single-seater series on the F1 support card, offering 30 aspiring young drivers the opportunity to showcase their talent across 10 Grands Prix during the season – including at the iconic Silverstone circuit.

Powered by 380bhp engines, the latest Dallara-built chassis incorporate many design philosophies from Formula 1. Positioned neatly between F4 (160bhp) and F2 (620bhp) on the motorsport ladder, F3 serves as the ideal stepping stone for the next generation of F1 hopefuls.

Past champions include current World Championship frontrunner Oscar Piastri (2020) and Gabriel Bortoleto (2023). Recent graduates such as Isack Hadjar, Franco Colapinto, Ollie Bearman, Liam Lawson, and Yuki Tsunoda have also used F3 as a springboard to higher levels of motorsport.

This year’s grid features the hottest young talents from no fewer than 22 countries across the globe – including two promising drivers from the UK.

Callum Voisin returns for his second F3 season and is firmly among the title contenders. He ended last season on a high with a maiden F3 victory in the Feature Race at Spa, and hopes are high for Silverstone, where he stood on the Feature Race podium last year.

The talented 19-year-old is a member of Motorsport UK’s highly respected Team UK initiative and currently sits ninth in the 2025 standings after 12 of 20 races, with his best finish being second place in Bahrain.

Like many before him, Voisin began his racing journey in British karting championships before progressing to circuit racing via Ginetta Juniors – a pathway also followed by fellow Briton James Hedley, the UK’s second rising star on this year’s F3 roster.

After capturing the Ginetta Junior title in 2019, Hedley advanced through British F4 and GB3 to secure his place on the F3 grid at the start of 2025.

Also on the fast track to the top is Louis Sharp. The British-born Kiwi is already familiar to UK audiences, having won the British F4 Championship in 2023 before further underlining his credentials with the GB3 title last year. He now lines up alongside Callum Voisin at Rodin Motorsport.

Following an early morning Free Practice session, the F3 contenders face a crucial 30-minute Qualifying session at 14:00 on Friday. The Sprint Race takes place at 09:00 on Saturday, with the longer Feature Race scheduled for 09:30 on Sunday morning.

All the F3 action will be broadcast live on Sky Sports F1.
