2026 Season Countdown: Championship openers that are not to be missed
It’s a new year, there is a chill in the air and that can only mean one thing; preparations are now really beginning to ramp up ahead of what promises to be another unforgettable year of British motorsport.
As the countdown continues, we’ve cherry-picked a handful of race meetings that will be well worth checking out over the course of the coming months.
4-5 April: Brands Hatch – British Truck Racing Championship
Brands Hatch will provide the backdrop to an Easter extravaganza at the beginning of April as the heavyweight behemoths of the British Truck Racing Championship rumble into action for the first time in 2026.
Weighing in at more than five tonnes and producing in excess of 1200bhp, these titans have to be seen to be believed and all eyes will be on ten-time champions Ryan Smith and Stuart Oliver too, as they begin their quest for what could be a history-making 11th premier class title.
Adding to the edge-of-the-seat entertainment at the Kent venue will also be races from the likes of the Pickup Truck Racing Championship, TCR UK Championship, Milltek Civic Cup and MINI CHALLENGE Clubsport series.
9-11 April: Warden Law – British Kart Championships
Lando Norris will enter this year’s Formula 1 World Championship with the honour of being the defending champion, safe in the knowledge that he will have also inspired countless young drivers that they too can one day reach the pinnacle of the sport.
Several of them will begin the next stop on their journey in the north of England as the British Kart Championships speed into Warden Law.
Three days of full-throttle competition lay ahead as the MicroMax UK, MiniMax 950, Junior Rotax and Senior Rotax classes all battle for supremacy.
11 April: Severn Valley Stages – British Rally Championship
Expect plenty of opposite lock as the Probite British Rally Championship shatters the peace and tranquillity of the Welsh forestry by blasting into life for 2026.
Making a triumphant return to the schedule after being cancelled due to storm damage last year, the Severn Valley Stages will serve as the series’ curtain-raiser.
Utilising the legendary roads and pace notes from the Wales Rally GB archive, the Builth Wells-based gravel spectacular will see competitors pack significant mileage into a single-day format – all amongst the stunning Welsh forestry.
11-12 April: Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb
There is nothing more spectacular than watching a driver and their machine push themselves to their limit, all in the pursuit of beating their rivals and more importantly, the stopwatch.
Shelsley Walsh – one of the steepest hillclimb courses in the country – will begin a new year of competition with its first competitive event of 2026; and the competition will be revved up to get started.
Renowned for its challenging layout, the Worcestershire venue, which is run Midland Automobile Club, will open its doors to all manner of two, three and four-wheel machinery.
18-19 April: Donington Park – British Touring Car Championship
New cars, new drivers, credible contenders and even a fresh format for qualifying in the shape of a Saturday afternoon race, the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship is guaranteed to be back with a bang in mid-April.
The UK’s premier motorsport series will be buzzing with anticipation and excitement by the time it arrives at Donington Park and fireworks are expected to fly across the opening three tin top bouts of the season.
It isn’t just the BTCC that will be in action either with single-seater thrills coming from the Wera Tools F4 British Championship certified by FIA, as well as action from the MINI CHALLENGE and Porsche categories too.
25-26 April: Silverstone – British GT Championship
This year marks the 34th season of the British GT Championship and there is no better place for the 2026 campaign to commence than at the Home of British Motor Racing, Silverstone.
The championship’s blue ribbon event, the Silverstone 500, will provide a stunning spectacle as GT3 and GT4 machines go wheel-to-wheel around the world-famous Grand Prix circuit for a total of three hours.
Expect to see marques such as Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini, Aston Martin and more fighting for the major spoils that are on offer.
