London to crown Formula E World Champion
This year’s ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is all-set for its pulsating season finale in London… and tickets are still available.
After 14 races across 10 cities worldwide, the pioneering all-electric single-seater series reaches its highly-charged conclusion with this weekend’s double-header at ExCel. Now there are just two more close encounters remaining on the globe-trotting calendar for a World Champion to be crowned.
Right from the start in Mexico the competition has been fierce, with eight different race winners to date and no fewer than seven drivers still in contention for the title.
Jaguar’s TCS Racing’s Nick Cassidy had seemed firmly on target to lift the coveted crown, but two non-points finishes last time out in Portland, USA have opened the door for others. Cassidy’s two closest adversaries are his own team-mate and fellow Kiwi Mitch Evans and Pascal Wehrlein of Tag Heuer Porsche – they are both just 12 points adrift and well within striking distance with a maximum of 58 points still on the table. Wehrlein’s sparring partner António Félix da Costa, though, is very much the man on form – he is up to fourth in the standings having won the last three races and four out of the last five.
Two British drivers are also in contention: Oliver Rowland (Nissan Formula E) and Jake Dennis (Andretti Formula E). Rowland was a winner at Misano in Italy earlier this season while Dennis is the defending World Champion having clinched his first title in spectacular fashion on home soil at ExCel 12 months ago.
In fairness, this time Dennis is the rank outsider, and he admits his focus will be more on scoring points towards the Teams’ Championship, which is also to be decided in London, along with the first-ever Manufacturers’ title. Jaguar TCS Racing and TAG Heuer Porsche are best placed in the former while the tables are reversed in the latter with Porsche leading Jaguar.
With its unique blend of indoor and outdoor sections, the London ExCel Circuit presents a one-off challenge and the perfect setting to host the final showdowns of Formula E’s GEN3 era.
As in 2023, the 2.08km, 20 turn track begins indoors on a silky-smooth surface providing excellent grip for the drivers. Then, after negotiating a quick succession of corners, the pack heads outside onto the highly abrasive asphalt surrounding the exhibition centre. The constant changes in surface, elevation and lighting make it an ultra-challenging and exciting venue for drivers and fans alike.
For those wishing to witness what is promising to be another electrifying finale, the last few tickets remain on sale. In a significant new development, TV viewers in the UK will also be able catch both races live and free-to-air on Quest. Free practice, qualifying and race coverage on Saturday and Sunday will be also aired on TNT Sports 1.
“We’re delighted to be able to offer fans in the UK and Ireland the opportunity to watch the 2024 Formula E Hankook London E-Prix free-to-air on Quest,” enthused Jeff Dodds, Formula E CEO.
“Along with the extended race weekend build-up and coverage from our media partner TNT Sports, it’s fantastic to be able to showcase the conclusion of this year’s Formula E championship live and free-to-air on an additional platform – especially for the UK’s home race – allowing even more viewers to watch all the exciting on-track action. With seven drivers mathematically in with a chance of winning the Season 10 title, it’s all to play for and the season finale promises to provide thrilling racing right down to the wire.”
