Wigton Motor Club’s new headquarters in Moota was officially opened by local MP Trudy Harrison last week. Its dedicated volunteers, the driving force behind the build, overcame unexpected delays during the global pandemic to present its members with the updated facilities.

The club’s new home, known as the Motor House, has been a labour of love for members who have given up their time, skills and energy over the past two years to bring the project to fruition. As well as being a social hub for events and training sessions designed to attract a younger audience to get involved in the sport, Wigton Motor Club members can use the maintenance section of Motor House to work on their cars.

“It’s fabulous to see all the meticulously maintained classic cars on show,” commented MP Harrison on arriving to a host of classic cars on display for the opening event. “I congratulate everyone involved in the building of this excellent facility. I know it will allow the club to continue to grow and thrive, with a focus on encouraging new and younger members to come through, and I wish the club all the very best for the future.”

Wigton Motor Club was founded in 1923 and is one of the North’s biggest car clubs with over 800 members from all corners of Cumbria and Scotland, and the North East. It offers a complete motorsport events programme, such as autotests, historic and Targa rallies and tours, including the popular Cumbria Classic Weekend.

Club Secretary Graeme Forrester said: “For a motor club to have facilities like this is unique, and it’s a fantastic achievement for our club. It provides a base for people with a shared interest to come together.”
