Oliver Rowland Crowned Formula E World Champion
Britain has its second ABB FIA Formula E Drivers’ World Champion. Two years ago, Jake Dennis claimed the title – now, Oliver Rowland has added his name to the top trophy in electric motorsport.
The 32-year-old Yorkshireman arrived in Berlin for the series’ penultimate race weekend with a commanding lead, and a fourth-place finish in Sunday’s showdown was enough to clinch the crown ahead of the season finale in London later this month.
With wins in Mexico, Jeddah, Monaco, and Tokyo, Rowland has been the dominant force this season. He now hopes to lead his Nissan paymasters to both the Teams’ and Manufacturers’ titles in the concluding double-header at ExCeL London.
“It’s going to take a while to sink in – this is the perfect fairy-tale,” admitted the UK’s latest World Champion. “I’m very proud to win this with the Nissan Formula E Team, but the season isn’t over yet – we still have two championships to fight for, and our focus is fully on these now.”
Like many, Rowland’s path to the top began in karting, which he took up at the age of seven. He won the Super 1 National Cadet Championship twice before moving into single-seaters, winning the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award and £100,000 in December 2011. He is also one of many beneficiaries of Motorsport UK’s Academy programme.
After impressing further by winning the Formula Renault 3.5 Championship, Rowland graduated to FIA Formula 2 and held official Development Driver roles with both the Renault F1 team and Williams F1. However, with no vacancies on the Grand Prix grid, he switched to Formula E with Nissan in 2018.
Following a two-season spell with Mahindra, Rowland returned to Nissan at the start of last season, finishing fourth overall. Now, 12 months later, he has a coveted World Championship title to his name.
