Impressive run for Lizzy Mentier at the FIA Karting “GKP” World Cup
Lizzy Mentier, aged 16 from Marske-by-The-Sea, represented the UK at the inaugural FIA Karting “GKP” World Cup, this past weekend, at the brand-new LYL International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
For one in seven of the drivers this was the first international event of their early careers, with 50 nationalities represented, tackling the 21 corners of the LYL International Circuit.
The new event, forms part of the FIA’s Global Karting Plan, which aims to create more accessible, high-quality international karting opportunities for emerging talent around the world.
Lizzy placed P6 in qualifying, before finishing P3, P2 and P8 in the heats. During the final, she reached P4 at one point but unfortunately got caught up in some racing incidents and the race was cut short and red flagged after a heavy rain shower, with Lizzy finishing in P11.
Dan Parker, Head of Karting, Motorsport UK, comments, “Lizzy was a fantastic ambassador for herself and for Motorsport UK at the FIA Karting World Cup. Her pace in mixed conditions, the way she adapted so quickly to OK and the Academy-style format, and the way she carried herself throughout the event were all hugely impressive.”
