British Drivers Gear Up for Glory at 24 Hours of Le Mans

Monday 09 June 2025

For over a century, British motorsport drivers and fans have made the annual pilgrimage to the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans in northern France.

What began as a daring adventure – racing through the night on dusty, closed French roads – has evolved into a showcase of British prowess on the world stage. From eccentric beginnings to more recent eras of dominance, British passion for Le Mans has only deepened with time as brands such as Bentley, Aston Martin and Jaguar have proved their sporting credentials on the celebrated Sarthe circuit.

Over the years UK drivers have celebrated more victories at Le Mans than those from any other nation. In total, 34 British racers have claimed a remarkable 45 wins – surpassing even the host nation France, whose 28 winners have secured 42 victories.

The first British winner, Bentley’s Frank Clement, took the chequered flag in 1924. Most recently, James Calado triumphed in the Centenary edition of the race in 2023, driving for Ferrari (photo).

Calado returns this weekend with the Prancing Horse, aiming for a second triumph in the iconic endurance classic. He headlines a formidable British contingent across all three categories.

In the top-tier Hypercar class, Calado is joined by fellow past winners Nick Tandy (Porsche) and Mike Conway (Toyota). Also eyeing the top step of the podium are sportscar stars Philip Hanson (Ferrari), Paul di Resta (Peugeot), and Cadillac drivers Jack Aitken, Alex Lynn, and Will Stevens. Former Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button is another big name in the Cadillac camp.

British talent is also well-represented in the LMP2 prototype category, with proven race-winners such as Tom Blomqvist, Oliver Jarvis, Nick Yelloly, and Jamie Chadwick among the contenders.

The LMGT3 class is shaping up to be equally competitive, featuring a crowded field of top manufacturers including Aston Martin, BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Ford Mustang, Lexus, McLaren, Porsche – and now Mercedes-AMG joining the grid.

Those not making the journey to France can catch every moment of the action live on TNT Sports including free practice sessions, qualifying, Hyperpole and the 24 hour race itself. There’s also a live stream available via FIAWEC.TV with live timing and extra exclusive content.

The race begins at 15:00 (local time) on Saturday. The only question is: will the Union Flag be flying high once again by 15:00 on Sunday?
