How communities such as Race for Diversity can build resilience and confidence within your pursuit of opportunities within motorsport

Joshua Owusu, a member of the Race for Diversity community, shares his thoughts around building resilience and confidence…

In the fast‑paced world of motorsport, where innovation and precision are paramount, communities like Race for Diversity are proving to be vital for change. For many aspiring engineers from underrepresented backgrounds, breaking into STEM can feel like navigating an unfamiliar track. Race for Diversity is helping to change that narrative.

As a Black individual pursuing a career in STEM, access to guidance and industry insight was often limited. Race for Diversity provided both, fostering technical expertise and the confidence to compete on the national stage.

That support translated into tangible achievements: becoming a two‑time national finalist in the prestigious F1 in Schools competition, securing the National Project Management Award, and winning the Regional Sponsorship Award. Meeting Radzi Chinyanganya for him to tell me that his core memory from the whole competition was me celebrating 2nd place on the leaderboard reinforced the belief that success is possible regardless of background or skin colour.

Beyond technical skills, it has nurtured essential soft skills such as resilience, leadership, teamwork, and communication; all that are critical in both engineering and motorsport.

While motorsport remains a dream destination, the journey has expanded to embrace a broader engineering future. The influence that communities such as Race for Diversity demonstrates that when communities invest in inclusion, they don’t just change individual lives – they help reshape the industry itself.
