McLaren and Lando Norris celebrated with coveted Motorsport UK Awards

Friday 04 July 2025

Ahead of the British Grand Prix, McLaren have received silverware with Lando Norris being awarded the Hawthorn Memorial Trophy and Zak Brown collecting the Sir Malcolm Campbell Trophy on behalf of the team – two of Motorsport UK’s most coveted awards.

Norris and Brown joined Motorsport UK Chair, David Richards CBE, and Chief Executive Officer, Hugh Chambers, in the Silverstone paddock, receiving the iconic trophies to celebrate their incredible achievements in 2024.

Norris shines to secure first Hawthorn Memorial Trophy

The Hawthorn Memorial Trophy honours Mike Hawthorn, Britain’s first Formula 1 World Champion and is awarded annually to the most successful British or Commonwealth driver in the previous year’s FIA Formula 1 World Championship.

Norris finished second in the championship in 2024, taking 13 podiums throughout the course of the season, delivering a maiden win in Miami followed by victories at Netherlands, Singapore and Abu Dhabi, as McLaren won the Constructors’ Championship for the first time since 1998.

Norris joins a list of greats including Sir Lewis Hamilton, Sir Stirling Moss, Jim Clark, Sir Jackie Stewart, Alan Jones, Damon Hill, Nigel Mansell, Jacques Villeneuve, and Jenson Button. Last year’s winner Hamilton is the most successful recipient of the award, claiming the accolade 12 times.

Lando Norris, Formula 1 Driver, McLaren Racing, said: “It’s an honour to receive the Hawthorn Memorial Trophy ahead of my home race, the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Motorsport UK has been involved in my career since the start following my journey through karting and into single seaters, so this means a lot.

“The team did an amazing job throughout 2024, and it was an incredible journey with memorable moments in my career such as my first win in Formula 1 and closing the season with victory in Abu Dhabi to secure the team’s first Constructors’ Championship in 26 years. I’m grateful to Zak, Andrea and the entire team plus all the papaya fans for their support along the way.”

McLaren back on top and recognised by Motorsport UK with the Sir Malcolm Campbell Trophy

The Sir Malcolm Campbell Trophy is awarded to those who have made a significant impact on British motorsport, whether through their achievements as a driver, engineer, as team, or promoter.

McLaren needs little introduction. The Woking based company is best known as a Formula 1 constructor – the second-oldest active team and the second most successful team on the current Grand Prix grid with 197 race victories.

Over the past six decades, McLaren has won no fewer than 12 Drivers’ titles and nine Constructors’ crowns, the latest of these coming in 2024. It is not only Britain’s most successful F1 team, it is also the only constructor to have won motorsport’s fabled Triple Crown: the Formula 1 World Championship, the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

McLaren’s representation of motorsport on the global stage in Formula 1, IndyCar, Formula E, F1 Academy, F1 Sim Racing and soon to be World Endurance Championship continues to see them operate at the highest level offering development and employment opportunities within the UK.  Following the team’s 2024 Constructors’ Championship victory, and their progress in championing sustainability in the sport, that the iconic papaya team are awarded the Sir Malcolm Campbell Trophy.

Zak Brown, CEO, McLaren Racing, said: “I’m incredibly proud to collect Motorsport UK’s prestigious Sir Malcolm Campbell Trophy on behalf of McLaren Racing. It was a hard-fought season with unforgettable moments, including Lando and Oscar securing their first F1 wins, before a thrilling end in Abu Dhabi to secure our ninth F1 Constructors’ Championship. It’s great to see the recognition given to the entire McLaren team for their hard work and dedication both on and off track in our journey to the top.”

David Richards CBE, Chair of Motorsport UK, commented, “Motorsport UK is proud of the ongoing success of Lando Norris and McLaren, who are both representing the UK at the absolute pinnacle of the sport.

“Lando is a special talent that came through the UK karting pathway, the British F4 Championship and single-seater pathway and is now one of the best in the world. It is an honour to recognise his success through the Hawthorn Trophy and we wish him the best of luck for the remainder of the season.

“McLaren is synonymous with British motorsport and it is fitting to recognise their efforts through the Sir Malcolm Campbell Trophy for putting UK motorsport firmly on the map. Under Zak Brown’s leadership, the team is back where they deserve to be.”
