The golden pathway to Formula 1

Thursday 03 July 2025

This year’s FORMULA 1 QATAR AIRWAYS BRITISH GRAND PRIX 2025, will mark a very special milestone: exactly 75 years since Silverstone had the honour of hosting the first-ever points-scoring Formula 1 race.

Both the sport and Silverstone have evolved enormously since that inaugural event in 1950, but Britain has continued to play a central role in F1 history. Of the 34 World Champions crowned over the past 75 years, no fewer than 10 have hailed from the UK – with Brazil and Germany following, each producing three champions.

Today, the vast majority of F1 teams are based in Britain, and with four British drivers currently on the Grand Prix grid, no other nation can match its representation. By any measure, it remains a remarkable sporting success story.

Adding further weight to this dominance, three British drivers have already claimed victories this season: Lando Norris triumphed in Australia, Monaco and most recently last Sunday in Austria, George Russell won in Canada, and Sir Lewis Hamilton took victory in the opening Sprint Race in China.

All three – along with fellow F1 Brit Ollie Bearman – cut their teeth in the thriving and highly competitive UK junior karting scene before progressing to single-seaters when age permitted.

That single-seater development pathway is perfectly showcased at Silverstone this weekend, with Formula 4, Formula 3, and Formula 2 all featuring on the British Grand Prix programme. This marks the first time all three official FIA feeder series have shared the support race bill at the same Grand Prix event.

Regardless of their current formula, all these promising young drivers have already proven themselves on the lower rungs of motorsport’s ladder and now dream of securing a coveted spot in Formula 1.

Meanwhile, those already in F1 will be focused on winning the British Grand Prix itself, one of the most prestigious and fiercely contested races on the calendar.

It’s a victory Hamilton has savoured a record nine times – and now, as a Ferrari driver, a tenth win would surely bring the house down.

Last July, Russell appeared poised for his first home victory, leading the early laps from pole position before rain dashed his hopes. Norris also led during last year’s race but ultimately had to settle for third, earning his first podium at Silverstone.

Bearman, too, has tasted success at Silverstone, finishing third in the 2022 F3 Feature Race. Now, at just 20 years old, he finds himself sharing the grid with Hamilton, Russell, and Norris – further proof that the F4, F3, and F2 pathway remains a golden route for those with standout talent.

As further proof, look no further than current championship leader Oscar Piastri – he was a winner in British F4, FIA F3 and FIA F2 before rising to the pinnacle with McLaren in 2023.
