Volunteers’ Week: Meet the Timekeeper

Friday 06 June 2025

Rachael Furnbullard spent many hours at a kart track during her childhood, before taking the leap into timekeeping…

How did you get into motorsport?

My family worked at a local kart track and ever since I was a small child, I got taken along too. My first ever volunteer role was carrying manual lap sheets from the timing room to race control on my bicycle.

What made you decide to become a timekeeper?

In my teens, I learned to do manual lapscoring and from there, I learned how to use timekeeping software. I applied for my licence as soon as I was old enough and haven’t considered any other roles since. I enjoy being such a low profile but useful part of an event – with the added bonus of a decreased chance of being rained on!

Do you have any advice for anyone considering volunteering?

Absolutely do it! Whether you’re using skills you already have, or learning new ones on the job, volunteering in motorsport is a great way to spend the weekend. You’ll meet new people, make new friends, and be part of running an amazing sport.
