First 2023 British Champions crowned; Moffatt makes it nine in Autotest, Dovey takes Car Trials title

Monday 14 August 2023

It may only be August but the first Motorsport UK champions of 2023 have already been confirmed, with Alastair Moffatt and Tim Dovey doing enough to claim honours early in their respective categories.

Autotest veteran and stunt driver Moffatt did it again in the British Autotest Championship, securing his ninth title – and third in a row – with another dominant display.

Meanwhile Dovey, who committed to a full season of British Car Trial Championship action having only done sporadic rounds prior, was rewarded with his first championship win.

Autotest is an immensely popular form of motorsport, the aim being to negotiate a memorised, low-speed course – without hitting any markers – as quickly as possible.

Car control is key, and Moffatt once again displayed this in spades, despite a strong challenge from nearest rival Willie Keaning.

Despite his efforts, Keaning couldn’t do enough to prevent Gloucestershire-based Moffatt from taking the championship with two rounds to spare when he won the South of Scotland Car Club’s Maximum Attack Autotest on Saturday 15 July.

Dovey’s triumph in the British Car Trial Championship came at North Wales Car Club and Bala & District Motor Club’s double-header in Wales.

Dovey took top honours aboard the standard Renault Clio he shares with son Charlie, who is currently third in the points standings with one round remaining.

The final round, the Gaby Mohr Trial on 10 September, may well result in a Dovey one-two finish.
