Governance

Motorsport UK is the national membership organisation and governing body for four-wheel motorsport in the UK. A founding member of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), Motorsport UK represents competitors, volunteers, clubs and fans.

On 19 March 2019, Motorsport UK entered an exciting new period as its Council unanimously voted in favour of a new constitution. Documented in the Memorandum and Articles of Association (available HERE), Motorsport UK fully aligned itself with Sport England and UK Sport’s Code for Sports Governance that sets out the levels of transparency, diversity and inclusion, accountability and integrity that are required to meet gold standards of governance.

Launched in 2016, the Code has been applied to more than 4,000 organisations across its three Tiers of funding and has provided a standard framework of governance for a wide and diverse range of national, regional and local bodies, community groups and charities providing sport and physical activity opportunities.

As a result of the change, the Motorsport UK Board is the ultimate decision-making body in the governance of UK motorsport. Historically, this was the role of the Motorsport UK Council who now inform and advise the Board on key issues affecting motorsport, helping to shape strategy and promote the sport in the UK.

Motorsport UK’s Board is made up of a greater proportion of Independent Non-Executive Directors, in addition to members from the Council representing the sport’s direct interests.

The Council has expanded significantly to include representatives of a wider range of stakeholders, including motorsport venues, broader motorsport activities such as commercial karting and the motorsport industry in general. This allows a greater range of views to be considered, ensuring the governing body better reflects the whole sport.

Feeding into the Board and Council is 35 Motorsport UK specialist committees who are responsible for developing, evaluating, and amending rules and regulations with regards to their respective areas of expertise. The Committees comprise more than 300 individuals including existing competitors, volunteer officials and marshals, administrators, all of whom are experts in their respective areas.

A Rules Committee, drawn from across the disciplines, reviews regulation changes proposed by the various specialist committees. Meeting bi-annually, the Rules Committee reviews proposed regulation changes and ensures that full consideration is given prior to submission to the Motorsport UK Board.
