Motorsport UK Celebrates Highly Commended Club and Volunteers
Motorsport UK is delighted to announce the club and volunteers who were highly commended in the 2020 Club and Volunteer of the Year awards:
High Commended Club: Scottish Motorsport Marshals Club
Highly Commended Organising Team: Shenington Kart Racing Club
Highly Commended Volunteer: Karen Spencer
The Scottish Motorsport Marshals Club impressed the judging panel with their work to purchase a Fast Response Enhanced Medical Team Car during the early period of the pandemic, as they sought to meet new COVID-19 requirements where a doctor was now unable to travel in a rescue unit at events. As the only Club in Scotland that is dedicated to all four-wheel motorsport disciplines, there are very few motorsport events where the SMMC is not playing a significant role with either trained personnel or specialist equipment being involved.
Shenington Kart Racing Club were Highly Commended in the new Organising Team of the Year category following their work to ensure their venue was COVID-19 secure, and that events could run as soon as safely possible.
Secretary of the club, Graham Smith, continues: “Well before Motorsport UK issued the restart guidelines, the team were hard at work organising the changes for a possible restart of kart racing. This included consulting the environmental officers at Cherwell District Council for an agreed safe restart, ordering PPE in the midst of national shortages and devising one-way systems round the paddock and into and out of buildings.”
Highly Commended in the Volunteer category, Karen Spencer received two nominations from fellow club members as a thank you for her hard work with the Buccaneer Motor Sports Club. Karen, who volunteers as a Motorsport UK Trainer, is well known in the rallying community and has stayed connected with many marshals she knows who live alone throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and has carried out social distanced visits, telephone calls and emails.
