Up to Speed: 17 – 18 September 2022

Friday 16 September 2022

This weekend classic machinery takes center stage at the world-famous Goodwood Revival in Sussex, and there’s a bill of rallying, circuit racing and StreetCar disciplines on offer across the length and breadth of the British Isles.

Let’s get you up to speed:

Around the Clubs

This week brought the news that StreetCar has quadrupled its recognised clubs and this weekend features a lineup of events you can compete in using a free RS Clubman licence, and a standard road car.

63 Car Club will host the Bob Miller Memorial Navigational Rally, with similar 12 Car Rally events hosted by Blackpalfrey Motor Club and the Sevenoaks & District Motor Club. Maidstone and Mid Kent Motor Club’s Kent Forestry Targa rounds out the rally contingent.

For AutoSOLO enthusiasts, the Farnborough District Motor Club’s ‘September Solo’ is a must-do or, if grass is more your terrain, the Bognor Regis Motor Club’s Grass Autotest is the place to be. Goodwood Revival

The world’s greatest historic motorsport meeting returns this weekend, as thousands descend on the Goodwood Estate in period dress to turn back the clock at the annual Revival.

Taking center stage this year is the Revive & Thrive Village, which shines a spotlight on an era where ‘make do and mend’ was the prevailing attitude to engineering. Workshops, demonstrations and talks celebrating vintage machinery, and how to re-use, repair and re-purpose them.

On-track, a bumper line up of stars, including the likes of Jenson Button, Sir Jackie Stewart, Damon Hill, Martin Brundle, Max Chilton, Brendon Hartley, Tom Kristensen, Jean-Eric Vergne, Scott Dixon, Dario Franchitti and Stoffel Vandoorne will all take to the circuit for their annual dose of historic action.

Racing commences from Saturday. Tickets for the event have sold out, but if you can’t make the trip to Sussex, follow all the action live on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjXF518YTHM

Watergate Bay Sprint – Newquay

This weekend marks the return of the Watergate Bay Sprint, held as part of Motorsport Month South West.

The event, co-organised by the Truro and District Motor Club, Plymouth Motor Club, Newquay Auto Club and Camel Vale Motor Club, pits competitors in a high-octane race against the clock using the B3276 coastal road between Newquay and Padstow.

A prominent fixture on the British motorsport calendar, the event attracts stars – and their cars – from all over the country, with up to 220 competitors – plus a reserve list – set to descend on the South West.

Whilst on site, why not visit the Motorsport UK stand, and find out more about the opportunities available to you through the sport?

British Truck Racing Championship – Snetterton

Ryan Smith (Daimler) could take another crucial step towards a seventh British Truck Racing Championship title as the ‘big rigs’ power their way into Snetterton, Norfolk this weekend.

The Mansfield racer extended his advantage to 62 points over nearest rival Stuart Oliver (Volvo) in the standings last time out, winning the first and last of five races at Donington’s annual ‘Convoy in the Park’ event with a brace of commanding drives.

Oliver only holds a seven-point buffer in turn over third-placed David Jenkins’ MAN, with John Newell (MAN) and Simon Reid’s IVECO rounding out the top five in Division 1.

In Division 2, Luke Garrett (MAN) remains locked in a fierce battle with Brad Smith (DAF) for the coveted crown. Jock Borthwick’s MAN is also in the hunt, a further nine points back.

Around the Circuits

The UK is world-famous for its vibrant club racing scene, and this weekend’s offering is no exception to the rule at some of the nation’s premier circuits.

Silverstone will reverberate to the sound of the Ferrari Challenge Europe, with challengers from the legendary Italian marque set to tackle the full Grand Prix layout.

Sportscars also form the bulk of the programme at Donington Park, in the form of MSVR’s GT Cup with support from Radicals, Monoposto single seaters and the like.

The BRSCC has a double header either side of the Scottish border, with Knockhill hosting their popular Caterham, Fiesta and BMW Compact categories, and Croft entertaining the CityCar Cup, C1 Endurance and Civic Cup series’, among others.

Mighty Minis are set to take on the equally-titanic Cadwell Park over the weekend, alongside Formula Vee, and at Brands Hatch, it’s Ford Power Live, featuring a range of machinery from Formula Ford, to Porsche Club 911 and Boxsters.
